Let’s take today’s verse sentence by sentence, even piece by piece, and talk about it. It seems a simple formula, and very straightforward, but it bears discussion and a little scrutiny.
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips” -- This is an instruction, first and foremost. It’s an imperative, not just good advice. It instructs us to talk about The Word, and not just sometimes, but always. We are instructed to recite it, learn it, discuss it, talk about it, teach it, breath it…all the time.
“meditate on it day and night” -- Here, we are told (not just encouraged; told!) to ponder, think deeply on, deliberate on, and even dream about The Word.
“so that you will be careful to do everything written in it.” -- This part tells us WHY we should be obedient to the instructions.
“Then you will be prosperous and successful.” -- You might think THIS part is the WHY, but it’s not. The WHY is because God desires our obedience to His Word, and we owe it to Him as our Creator and Savior. The “prosperous and successful” part is not the result of our obedience; rather it is God’s grace, poured out on those He loves.
