A friend recently asked me a rhetorical question: “Did you ever have to teach your kids to do the wrong thing?” Of course not! Sin comes naturally. We want to be in charge of ourselves. Obedience is difficult.
In today’s passage, Jesus reminds us of the importance of obedience. Anyone who does not love Jesus will not obey His teaching. It is important to see the link between love and obedience here. It seems to make the word “obedience” stronger.
It is also important that we look at this verse in context. It is not just a warning to those who are disobedient. Instead, we read in verse 23 that those who love Jesus will obey Him. Consequently, the Father will love us and Jesus and The Father will make their home with us. What an awesome thought! Let’s remember not only the consequence of disobedience, but the incredible promise that comes with obedience!
