In a culture that measures happiness and status according to wealth this verse can be very jarring. Think about how closely tied our identity is to what we do for work, our source of wealth. I can think of times in my my own life when I was between jobs and having that feeling of less than.
As much emphasis as we place on wealth and possessions we are being told that understanding is clearly much more valuable. The phrase “you can’t take it with you” and “you never see a hearse with u-haul hitched behind it” come to mind.
Clearly understanding is found in God’s Word which is appropriately referred to as the words of life. For within those pages you will find all wisdom for life and death. As we celebrate our independence from British rule, let us also celebrate our independence from sin and death thanks to Christ’s life giving sacrifice.
God has truly blessed us beyond what we could ever hope for or deserve.
