Men,
This is an all encompassing passage. It encompasses the breadth and width of understanding to be found in The Word.
The teacher of the law is someone who had studied and taught from the Law of Moses, Psalms, Proverbs and the Prophets. But their knowledge was incomplete. They did not yet know The Holy One who is understanding, Jesus. When these teachers knew Jesus and became His disciples the gaps in their understanding were filled in.
We saw this with Paul. A one time persecutor of Christians and eventual convert. He was a scholar of the old texts. Once He knew Jesus, his understanding of God and how He relates to all areas of our lives flourished as evidenced by so many of his letters being part of the New Testament.
Here is the important lesson of this passage for you today. Jesus is the beginning of your journey of understanding with God, but not the end. He is the fulfilment of all that was said before. He is the context, the illumination and the application of all God’s truths, commands, laws and decrees.
In this era of restoration and grace, due to the sacrifice of Jesus and the gift of The Spirit, we can fully grasp and apply all of the treasures in God’s Word throughout our lives as each circumstance warrants them.
The value of God’s Word is in all of God’s Word taken together. Keep stepping on this way of understanding that God has set your feet upon. As Jesus stated, He will show you things not spoken of since the creation of the world.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Apply your heart in pursuit of this most valuable treasure. Keep applying it each and every day. Every time you do God will meet you there with deep truths and connections in His Word. You will never outlearn all that God can teach you. So never stop pursuing understanding.
