30 Days of Hope - Day 20

Friends,

Today we read one of the most peaceful and reassuring passages in all of scripture. It seems especially relevant today as we’re living in a crazy time where so many of us feel weary and burdened. Simply watching the news can fill us with anxiety. It is comforting to know that Jesus will give us rest.

One of my favorite passages comes at the beginning of the chapter. In prison and nearing the end of his life, John the Baptist sends out his disciples to ask Jesus if He is “the one who was to come.” Jesus’ answer is fascinating. He doesn’t simply say “yes” or give a promise. Instead, He points to the observable evidence that proved He was the Messiah.

“Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.” And, in what seems to be encouragement for John, Jesus finishes by saying, “Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.”

Let us not fall away; let us not be discouraged. Even in difficult times such as this pandemic, we know that Jesus is the Christ. He loves us and He will give us rest.

Yours Brothers in Christ,
