For believers there is nothing unusual about giving thanks prior to a meal. Saying “thanks” before we eat can be downright routine if we care to admit it.
In this instance, Jesus gives us an example of giving thanks before a meal that is truly extraordinary. There is a demonstration here of the power of being truly thankful, not only for what is right in front of us, but the provision that can come when we demonstrate our trust through thanks.
This was no ordinary meal. The math just doesn’t look good if we compare the number of loaves and fish to the thousands of hungry mouths. We often do that. View a problem through our human lens not being able to see the opportunity that God, our provider, will not only meet but exceed our needs. What is necessary? To be deeply and wholeheartedly thankful for what is right in front of us. And to be expectant that God has something much, much more than we could ever imagine.
Thank you Jesus for showing us the power that comes with being truly thankful. Thank you for showing us how you take the ordinary and make it miraculous!
