Friends,
These verses lay the foundation for a central truth about God, He is our protector. He watches over those who Trust in Him. It’s easy to lose sight of this when we’re worried and anxious, but God’s revealed word has left us plenty of examples of why we should be comforted, even when our instinct might be otherwise.
Imagine the anxiety Daniel must have felt as he entered the lions’ den. I find verse 17 especially powerful. It’s as if I can hear the stone being moved and being placed over the mouth of the den, signaling the final moments of Daniel’s life. Yet, to the king’s delight, the next morning Daniel was lifted from the den unscathed.
“For He is the living God and he endures forever; His kingdom will not be destroyed, His dominion will never end. He rescues and He saves; He performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth.”
These are powerful and very true words about our God. Do you know who said them? It wasn’t Daniel, it was the king he served who was not a believer. That is until He saw what Daniel’s Trust in God did for him. He was so levelled by Daniel’s relationship with God that he decreed all in his kingdom would revere the God of Daniel.
Now, we don’t know all of the details of God’s plan for our daily lives. We don’t know, for example, if God will “lift us from our den,” whatever that might be at the moment. What we do know, however, is that God loves us, God protects us, and He has a plan for us that will ultimately prevail. Take comfort in knowing that God is in control.
